Edinburgh Common

An Address of Distinction

Founded by Thomas McKay in 1829, the village of New Edinburgh was named in honour of Edinburgh, in McKay’s native Scotland. Over the years New Edinburgh's industrial buildings gave way to a vibrant and growing residential community that today is home to some of Ottawa's wealthier residents, civil servants, as well as several foreign embassies. Of course, the most notable residents are those at 24 Sussex Drive, official residence of the Prime Minister of Canada, and Rideau Hall, the Governor General of Canada's residence and grounds.
